FAQ

  1. Some commonly asked questions about Sweet Adelines and the Baton Rouge Chorus
  2.

Do I have to know how to read music?

No!  It helps of course, since we do learn new songs from printed music, but it's not required.  Many of our members do not read music.

Do I have to have experience singing or performing in public?

No!  All you have to have is the ability to sing, the desire to learn and have fun...before you know it, you're a performer!

How do I get started?

Come to rehearsal a few times to meet the other ladies and get a feel for how the chorus works.  You'll get to sing from your first visit, and be treated to first class vocal education.  If you like what you see and hear, let our membership coordinator know you're interested in joining and she'll give you all the particulars.

How do I audition if I decide I want to join?

Prospective members will tape one or two songs with the chorus or a quartet. Tapes are evaluated to see if the singer will be able to sing 4-part harmony. A professional (or solo) level of musicianship is not necessary.

How much time commitment is required?

At a minimum, you should plan to participate in rehearsal each week (about 3 hours).  Beyond that, you will probably spend some time each week singing and learning new songs (a lot of us do it on our commute to and from work!).  We have performances periodically during the year -- more around Christmas.  We attend competition with our Sweet Adelines region once a year, usually in March or April.  There are other regional meetings held two or three times a year that are always optional, though they are always recommended as they are both fun and educational.

How much does it cost?

$33 monthly dues cover International and Regional Education Fee escrow and local dues. Upon joining there is a one-time costume assessment and an initial fee paid to International and Regional.
