What is Barbershop?
Barbershop’s harmony features four voice parts which are called by their traditional names - tenor, lead, baritone and bass – whether referring to men's or women's vocal groups. One of the distinctive qualities of barbershop harmony is that the melody, sung by the lead voice, is below the tenor harmony.
2. About the Chorus
What is the Baton Rouge Chorus?
We are an a cappella chorus specializing in Barbershop harmony — four parts, tight chords, and a whole lot of joy. We’re a chapter of Sweet Adelines International and welcome women from across the Baton Rouge area who love to sing.
What style of music do you sing?
Our primary style is Barbershop, a uniquely American art form rooted in rich, four part harmony. We also perform contemporary, jazz, holiday, and showstyle arrangements.
3. Membership
Who can join the chorus?
Any woman age 18 or older is welcome. We embrace singers of all backgrounds, identities, and musical experience levels.
Do I need singing experience to join?
We welcome singers of every experience level — from seasoned performers to those who simply love music and want to learn. If you can carry a tune and enjoy singing with others, you’ll fit right in.
Do I have to audition?
Yes — but don’t worry. Our audition process is friendly and supportive. We simply want to place you in the part that best suits your voice.
Will I have to sing alone?
It’s possible that there could be “solos” in a performance but basically we sing together in four-part harmony.
4. Rehearsals
When and where do you rehearse?
We rehearse weekly in the Baton Rouge area. For the most current schedule and location, visit our Visit a Rehearsal page or contact us directly.
How often do you rehearse?
We rehearse weekly and sometimes add special rehearsals for coaching or upcoming performances.
What happens at a rehearsal?
Rehearsals include vocal warmups, music review, choreography (for some songs), and coaching to help every singer grow. Expect a mix of learning, laughter, and harmony.
5. Performances & Events
Do you perform in the community?
Yes! We sing at local events, festivals, private functions, and our own annual show. If you’d like to book us, visit our Book Us page.
Can the chorus perform at my event?
Absolutely. We perform at corporate events, holiday gatherings, civic functions, weddings, and more. We can bring the full chorus or a smaller ensemble depending on your needs.
Do you charge for performances?
Yes. Performance fees help support our mission as a nonprofit organization. Contact us for details.
6. Education & Coaching
Do members receive vocal training?
Yes. Every rehearsal includes vocal instruction from our experienced director, and we regularly bring in expert coaches who specialize in Barbershop harmony. Our parent organization also offers virtual coaching and educational resources.
Do I need to read music?
No. Many members learn by ear. Sheet music and learning tracks are provided to help you learn your part.
7. Competitions
Does the chorus compete?
We do! Each spring, we participate in the Region 10 competition in Houston, Texas. It’s a fun, energizing weekend filled with music, camaraderie, and constructive feedback from certified judges. Many members find competition to be one of the most rewarding parts of the Sweet Adelines experience.
What is International Competition?
Choruses and quartets that win their regional contests advance to the International stage — a world class event held each fall in a different host city.
8. Quartets
What is a quartet?
A quartet is a group of four singers — one on each part — who rehearse and perform together in addition to singing with the chorus.
Can I join or form a quartet?
Yes! Many members participate in quartets. It’s a great way to improve your skills and enjoy even more harmony.
