Baton Rouge Chorus: Our History

The Beginning
The Baton Rouge Chorus has been part of the Capital Region’s musical heartbeat for more than half a century. Sweet Adelines International was founded in 1945, fifteen years later area women joined the fun. The Baton Rouge Chorus was Chartered on September 30, 1960.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the chorus grew steadily, performing at community events, local celebrations, and regional Sweet Adelines competitions. By the 1980s and 1990s, Baton Rouge Chorus had become a well‑known presence in the area, recognized for its warm community spirit, musical excellence, and commitment to empowering women through harmony.
Over the decades, the chorus has welcomed singers from all walks of life — teachers, nurses, students, retirees, business professionals, and lifelong musicians — all united by the thrill of ringing chords and creating something bigger than themselves.

Leadership Through the Years
Strong musical leadership has always shaped the sound and spirit of the Baton Rouge Chorus.
In its history, the chorus has had ten directors, including our current director, Sherry Barron. The other nine directors who have guided and inspired the chorus are Harold Place, Gwen Bruton, Mickey Megginson, Mary Beth McMurray, Tina Kneisler, Sue Devall, Cate McRitchie, Dr. Elizabeth Wallace, and Daniel Zeagler.
We also honor two additional directors who played meaningful roles in our journey:
- Jim Massey – Guest Director for two Region 10 competitions
- Paul Melancon – Director of the La Loisiane Chorus, which later merged with the Baton Rouge Chorus
Resillience Through Challenge (2020-2021)
The Covid pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to performing arts groups around the world, and Baton Rouge Chorus was no exception. With rehearsals paused and performances canceled, our membership dropped sharply. At one point, we were down to just 13 dedicated singers keeping the music alive during an uncertain time.
Yet resilience has always been part of our story. Members stayed connected, supported one another, and held onto the belief that harmony would return.
A New Era of Growth (2022-2026)
As in‑person singing resumed, the chorus began rebuilding with renewed purpose. New members joined, former members returned, and our sound grew stronger month by month.
Today, in 2026, we are proud to have grown to 27 active members, with several enthusiastic guests regularly visiting rehearsals and exploring membership. The energy in the room is vibrant, joyful, and full of momentum.
We’re not just rebuilding — we’re thriving. The future is shining bright for Baton Rouge Chorus and the music we love.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to grow, we remain committed to:
- Musical excellence
- Community engagement
- Education and vocal development
- Creating a welcoming, inclusive space for singers of all backgrounds
